8 tips for visiting Art Vancouver

Art Vancouver is back for its 6th edition May 5–8 at the Vancouver Convention Centre. Featuring artists from across Canada and around the world, the show is a must see. But how can you make sure you get the most out of your visit? Here are some helpful tips!

1. Do your research

There are over 100 exhibitors coming to showcase their work this weekend. That’s a lot of art to look at! Want a sneak peek? Check out the exhibitors page to see who’s coming, a sample of their work and to check out their website.

2. Check the event schedule

There are lots of other activities happening throughout the weekend. Be sure to check the event schedule to know what’s happening during your visit. Come see the runway, listen to panel talks, watch an art competition, attend an art class or see a live demonstration.

3. Some basic etiquette

There are a couple pieces of basic etiquette to keep in mind while visiting the show. Remember to not touch the artwork (unless you are invited to do so) and to ask before taking any photos. Our fingers carry lots of dirt and grease that can be damaging to artwork.

4. Grab a map

Looking for a particular exhibitor or just want to avoid getting lost in the aisles? Pick up a map at the event. There will be maps available with the full layout of the show, including the exhibitors and their booth numbers. This is a great resource for coming back to a particular booth if a piece caught your eye.

5. Start a conversation

Exhibitors are more than happy to chat with you while you are at their booth. Ask them questions about specific pieces, their creative practice, their career or their inspiration.

6. Prioritize comfort

Opening Night might be “dress to express,” but comfort is key for the rest of the weekend. The Vancouver Convention Centre West Hall A is a big space! You will be doing lots of walking and standing so comfortable shoes are super important.

7. Know what you are looking for

Looking for a particular piece of your space? Come to the show knowing what dimensions work and if there are any particular colours that fit best with your style. Coming with a vision will help you find the perfect piece, but remember to keep an open mind.

8. Take care of yourself

It can be really easy to get wrapped up in the excitement of the show, but it is still important to take care of yourself. Stay hydrated and remember to have something to eat.

Art fairs are an amazing opportunity to support artists and the growing art community here in Vancouver. Come build connections with artists and art lovers, expand your collection and marvel at talent from around the world. Be sure to get your tickets!
