Ashley Ponter, artist
Educated in the U.K. and Switzerland, I went on to complete my schooling in Paris at the Sorbonne. It was here, completely immersed in the world of art that I determined to follow the creative inspiration of the great masters of bronze sculpture.
In 1998, whilst living and working in Zimbabwe, I established my own silver casting studio, using the ‘lost wax’ process of casting. With the rugged wilderness of Africa on my doorstep and more than a few close encounters with big cats, a passion for sculpting African Wildlife was inevitable.
Since moving to beautiful British Columbia I have been inspired by the art history of the Pacific West Coast Native peoples and their deep connection to the land and extraordinary indigenous wildlife. Using strong form lines and the power of a simple distilled aesthetic I have created a series of unique 3D panels in anodized aluminum. This contemporary presentation is enhanced by mounts which vary from natural walnut to traditional reds as a counterpoint to the cool colours and smooth texture of the metal.
I work from my creekside studio in West Vancouver.
