Art! Vancouver will feature the charity Alley Outreach Project.
In summary, Alley Outreach Project is a student-run charity based out of local high schools. They are primarily focused on the Downtown Eastside community but advocate for the broader social issues or addiction, mental health, homelessness, gender issues, etc.
At the moment they are almost entirely student run. The founder, Mark Lindsay, is an ext oxy-addict and at the beginning of every year he comes to speak and tell his story of addiction of mental health to the students.
They have three outings, all organized by the students of participating schools – they fundraise for donations(monetary or materials), gather volunteers, and then bus down to Oppenheimer on Saturdays to hand out donations, connect with residents, and tour shelters.
At the end of the year they have a BBQ with a large amount of food from Vera’s Burgers and clothing to hand out. At the 2014 BBQ alone they served more than 2000 people.
We are happy to support a charity that develops young people’s leadership and organizational skills for liaisons and that connects high school students to the Downtown Eastside community. We will offer a variety of donation opportunities for both exhibitors and visitors at Art! Vancouver.
